“The concept of the Tourism Information Centre started back in the late 1970’s when then Premier Bill Vanderzalm announced the development of the new Inland Highway.
Together, the Council and Chamber of Commerce worked toward the establishing of the centre in the interchange area. This led to issues such as having the land removed from the Forest Land Reserve, gaining highway access, location of the centre and so on.
Support for the project has been tremendous; North Island Municipalities and the Comox Valley, various MLA’s over the past 30 years – Lord, Gillespie, Hagen – Tourism Vancouver Island, Wood Processors of Vancouver Island and others.
What started out as a Cumberland info centre is now going to be a Vancouver Island showcase.”
Bronco Moncrief, current Councilor and former Mayor of Cumberland
